Courses Offered- Home Economics
NUTRITION AND FOOD is a semester course designed to teach students the importance of food in their lives. Students will learn about the Food Guide Pyramid with a strong focus on food buying and preparation, kitchen equipment, sanitation and safety. Proper table manners and restaurant etiquette will be included. The kitchen labs will be used to provide hands-on experience and knowledge in proper use and care of recipes, utensils and appliances, including the microwave oven. Some consumer education will be included. A $20.00 lab fee will be collected to cover the food labs costs.

CLOTHING AND TEXTILES is a semester course designed to teach students the basic principles of design and fabric study. Students will be responsible for purchasing required sewing supplies. Each student will be required to complete two garments in class. Other areas will include grooming and personal development, wardrobe planning, clothing care, and consumer education. Several crafts will be included as projects. A $10.00 lab fee will be collected to cover sewing lab costs.

PARENTHOOD EDUCATION is a semester course which covers important responsibilities of parenting and is recommended for juniors and seniors. Topics include: reasons for studying parenthood; learning about family background; pregnancy and birth (medical costs and the 9-month time span), importance of good nutrition, exercise and personal grooming; a field trip to a Family Birth Unit at a local hospital; study of psychologists and their theories in order to learn the importance of guiding behavior so children will develop a healthy self concept; investigation of licensed childcare facilities; various aspects of financial costs, such as food, clothing, furniture and accessories; and a study of early childhood literature. A workbook must be purchased.

ADVANCED NUTRITION AND FOOD is a semester course designed for students who wish to pursue a career in the field of Culinary Arts. Students will continue advanced studies in the areas of kitchen basics, food service equipment, culinary basics and applications, as well as culinary management. Culinary management involves the business of a restaurant, as it relates to menus, nutrition, and working in a restaurant. The kitchen labs will be used to provide hands-on experience. A $40 food lab fee is required to cover costs.
