Hearts for Haiti

Academy of Our Lady High’s students quickly used their time and talents to generate funds to aid Haiti’s earthquake victims. The school’s sophomore class held a “Hearts for Haiti” fund raiser and within less than a week the tenth graders raised nearly $500. Persons who donated were given a red heart on which to write their names, and each heart was posted in a special display in the lunch hall. Kelly Phan, sophomore class treasurer from Marrero, is shown as she presents a heart to Lindsey Bourgeois, a Marrero junior. In addition, the Academy’s student council collected more than $600 through a special collection at a recent statewide student councils convention. Finally, students and employees also raised more than $1,000 through a “dress down” day on January 20. The total raised by Academy students for earthquake relief was $2,135. The school’s donations will be targeted to Haitian aid through the Salesian religious community, which has a pastoral and teaching presence in Haiti.
